Default Long Tubes or Not?

Getting a whole new exhaust system on my '92 LT1 'vert. Thinking about going w/ TPIS long tube headers, but worried about spark plug access, and ground clearance.(Heard TPIS headers hang low) If its too much of a PITA I wont get them, just hi- flow cats off the existing exhaust manifolds, and run the new exhaust back as a second option. Would like some input on this . Thanks! BTW not a race car, street car only.

Inspection not an issue

Im getting a really good "exhaust guy" to do this, no way I'm doing it!

Get Hooker long tube headers. They won't give you any spark plug clearance problems, they won't give you any ground clearance issues and they'll cost about half of what TPIS would like to charge you.

You need to do it. I have hooker headers on my 92 and the plug changes have never been easier. No burn wires or anything like that. Here have some pics:

I've never had an issue with ground clearance.

I had TPIS on my 85. Price is a bit more then the Hookers, but very well built, and includes the Y-pipe (oh wait, I see you have a 92, so regardless of what system you get other then EM you will ahve to fabricate from the headers to existing exhaust system). Spark plug access is a snap with these headers.
You might want to check out EM, they were doing a group purchase for LT1 headers, they also have pipes for between the headers and exhaust for stock and Corsa setups.
The TPIS system didn't hang any lower then other long-tube brands.

I agree. I have TPIS headers on my 85 and changing all the plugs couldn't be easier. And they don't hang low by any means. And if you need to, putting the headers on and taking them off is a snap.

Hookers hang low?? I think not. The oil pan almost hangs lower.

They mounted up pretty clean for me and shaved almost .7 off of my quarter times, so I'd say very worth it.

Nobody mentioned EM longtubes. Didn't they just have a GPwith a good price? I saw a set of these and they look great. If I didn't have to drill a well right now, they'd be in my Vette, soon.

I've got TPiS LT's on my '90 and I love 'em. They don't hang low as long as the Y-pipe fits ok *grumble grumble*. If you get headers get some nomex boots for your plugs (local speed shop) and definitely some Stage 8 (http://www.stage8.com/AutomotiveStart.htm) header bolts. Those things are Godsent. If you hate exhaust leaks as much as I do, buy them and you'll never have one.

Get a set of Hooker Header. I just installed a set last week on my 86 and it was easy to do, the only thing I would do different is put a hex bolt in rear of the passenger side of the header, although it's slotted it's a b*tch to get to.

Hey Midnight! The exhaust guy is kind of local, he's on Banta Ave in Fairlawn, which is right off of Rt4 West, before it turns into Broadway, right near Elmwood Park. The shop is Doug's Street Shop, and his # is (201)797-9424 He can do anything! His work is A#1! He's done custom work for alot of people including old school custom car designer George Barris, etc. He's a Magnaflow dealer, too. Ive seen his work, neat clean, and truly professional!

I have a few questions on this subject.
skateparkdave,VictorRussell'92.Nathan Plemons, and anyone else that might know the answer, I have a 93 6SPD LT1. What is the difference between getting the same headers for the 92 to fit the 93 Vette? If they are the same, whats the Part Number for them(Hooker LT's). I'm looking to go LT's also but I don't want to spend a fortune for them. Any help would be appreciated.

i can give you a good awnser because... Ive changed my header 2 times and both dont fit right... I ahve a 1996 auto lt1
seems like my 1996 has alot of changes and all the l98 headers dont fit the car....

the exhaust ports and bolt patterns are the same... its jsut if it fits the car. the hedmans didnt.. hooker 2151s are better but still dont do right by me.. I had to grind motor mount bolts to make them fit and now they are still so close to the tranny bell housing i will have to custom fab exhaust... my recomendation is spend the extra like $100 on some EMs!!!!!!
you can get 1 3/4s uncoated for 425. and then I cna ceramic coat them inside and out for $188. but either way.. IMHO get the right ones!
EM! and make sure you get them ceramic coated!
thanks alot

I might be stuck with going this route. Their just not many options with the C4 Vette's. I will get in contact with you when I order & recieve the headers so that you can coat them for me. Thanks Sean.

No difference at all. Only deal with Hookers on an Lt-1 is you have to get rid of emissions such as EGR/AIR which will make you fail an inspection if you live in an emissions controled state. I do not live in an emissions controled state. SO anyhoo the proper Hooker Header for the LT-1 is the Hooker 2151. It will say for an L98 but that is of no concern if you arent worried about emissions.

The correct L98 Header which will fit ALL LT-1s is the Hooker 2151. You just cannot use them with emissions such as AIR/EGR or your stock cats. You will need custom tuning to get rid of these systems.

I have a set of the hooker headers but my spark plug wires are jammed up against my headers, would a shorter spark plug give me enough clearance? let me know! thanks! (86 vette, iron vortec heads, hooker headers, aftermarket intake base and runners)
