Replacing the ribbon in early C4s requires the removal of the regulator from the door. If the ribbon is broken it can be replaced with a new one. If I recall, it's been awhile, it has to be riveted or bolted in and a rivet or some type of stop must be removed in order to slide the ribbon out thus the reason for removing it from the car. Upgrading to the new style regulator uses the exact same effort to remove and replace the early style with exception of another drilled hole and optional shortening of the glass mount bolts. So the decision to put in the additional effort to repair the old style or replace it with the new style is really a monetary issue. Used regulators can be found in the parts for sale section or on Ebay from $50 to $150 depending on whether it's used or new. Upgrading is a huge improvement especially if you are going to replace your outer door wipes. Replacement of the wipes in an early C4 puts additional stress on an already taxed system. Sometimes the window will just stop before it closes all the way due to the friction the wipe puts on the glass. Good luck. I have one used later style regulator left. I think it's the passenger side.
It was not difficult. Just time consuming. I had to drill the rivets out of the rails of the old mechanism and then had to bolt them back together. Lubed everything up while I had it apart too.
