Default 96 LT1 Gear Drive

SInce I am in the middle of the water pump/Opti project I am wondering if it would be smart to install a gear drive in place of the timing chain.

Does the Pete Jackson Gear Drive fit the LT1?
If so what if any mods are required?

I've read on a few occasions that the gear drives create harmonics in the range the knock sensors are tuned to pick up, sending false signals to the PCM, which will pull timing, killing performance.

I think I remember Nathan Plemons saying he installed it and removed it because of these issues... I might have him confused with someone else however.

About the best think you can do in terms of an upgrade would be going to a double roller from Coyles. However this requires an electric water pump. I have that combination on my LT1 for 3 trouble free years so far.

Do you remember the Cloyes part number for the chain and sprocket setup that you use? I am currently building a solid roller 383 for a friend and I need to either step up to a LT4 extreme chain or an aftermarket double roller that would fit in this car. Its a 93 and I am upgrading to a late model opti, he also has a Miz electric water pump so I won't have to worry about the water pump drive.

Cool thanks! That will save my buddy a lot of cash in place of the LT4 Extreme setup.

That's the one! It's nice how you can get the Coyles and the Mez. for about the price of the LT4 extreme by itself.

Default Cloyes Chain on 96

Don't forget if you're installing the Cloyes chain on a 96 you need to remove the reluctor ring (it's for the crankshaft position sensor) and have it programmed out. The crank sprocket will not fit behind the timing cover with the reluctor ring in place (actually it will fit, but then the motor won't turn).

Good luck!
