hypertech cap/coil quality control problems!!!

it's been a while since i posted. those of you who read my crap know i have health problems. the last problem my pig exhibited was when i put on new hypertech cap/coil, plugs and wires. the upshot was that the pig would not start after the install. those who were kind enough to reply to my plea for help know that the problem was not solved with the traditional distributor fixes.
today, a redneck buddy finally showed up to have a bash at the fix. first we pulled the cap and then he started pulling the coil off the cap. he went deeper untill he got to the center button. there was a lot of grease around it and the rubber buffer and spring. he started wiping off the clear grease amid my protestations that it must be dialectic (is that spelled right?) grease and he shouldn't remove it. he said it wasn't all that kinda' grease and wiped it off. the short answer is that it started right up. he had recognized that the grease should have only been on one side of the rubber buffer, and it was interfering with the current conduction through the spring into the center button. booyah!
watch your *** if you buy one of these combos. hypertech combos have a high regard among many tpi sites, and i think the product is a good one considering the throttle response and consistent idle i am now getting, but--the combo is probably now assembled in mexico, and the quality control is no doubt now questionable. i would be happier if they made it in china. the chinese government is clamping down on q/c in order to make their products more competitive in the world market.
also, i hooked up my new 88 fan control module. the fusible link to the battery connection was burned through, and now the main fan turns on when the engine is started. i don't think that is normal, but at least it is an improvment.
thanks to everyone who has helped me in the past. i appreciate all the help the studs in this forum have given me in the past. i've got a few more problems to sort out before the pig gets on the road, but the motor is now running and revving strong. i wouldn't have been able to do what i did today without red-neck inspiration, heineken (i splurged it's easter) and a couple of pain pills.
thanks, frog.
