Default New coolant temp sensor needed?

87 convertable. Temp sensor light is frequently lighting up with temps of 299, sometimes lower. Bounces down to normal temps then back up again. Doesn't matter if the car is hot or not. Thanks -Mike

Could be, but I'd bet on a wire shorting out intermittently.

RACE ON!!!

I think so too, probably a connection problem.

It definately sounds like a short. That wire is also located pretty close to the exhaust so it could have easily cracked the covering. You could try to put some oversized shrink tubing over the wire as far as you can get it in the engine compartment. Remove the wire from the sensor on the engine and slide the tubing over the wire as far as you can take it, then reconnect the wire to the sensor( this is best done when engine is cold of course). Hopefully it will stop the short and you can repair the wire properly. If you need to know that part let me know and I will walk you through it.
Good luck,
Woody
