Default Heater hose question on a '95

Wondering if anyone has run into this.

My heat doesn't work on my '95, and it seems the plenum door is opening and closing since I can hear it move/shut, but no heat. So it seems like there must be a blockage in the system somewhere. However the system is clean, recently flushed (didn't directly flush the heater core tho) But there is a strange looking object on one of the heater hoses. It's located about a foot or less away from where it goes into the firewall, and is about an inch long and is just clamped to the hoses on either end.

Any ideas what this is? I'm wondering if it's closed up inside and isn't letting coolant through. I checked the Helm's and there is no mention or picuture of it in there.

Thanks in advance

an in-line filter? I'd drain the system then pull it and see what it is.

When the engine is warmed up and running, if you feel the inlet and outlet heater hoses close to the heater core, are they both hot?
If they are, the coolant must be going through the core.

Well, when it's warmed up, one is hot and the other isn't.
And according to the trouble shooting in the Helm's manual, it's the wrong one thats getting hot.

Guess I'll pull that inline piece off and check it out. Anybody else remember seeing this piece? A clogged filter makes sense, not sure why there would be one, but after reading what a bear it is to replace the HC, maybe it's there for a reason.

that little black inline deal you are referring to has a spring and a checkball in it. not sure what its for but last summer mine blew in half while i was idling in a DQ drive up. i replaced it for $10. maybe your check ball stuck i dont know for sure. I considered taking it out but figured it was there for a reason..
