Hi
I have a 1988 corvette sometimes it starts to run terrible , You can hear it in the motor that it is not running right. Does not have the power that it does nomrlly does. it will shift hard. the milage gauges goes to 99 milles per gallon. Then just as quick as it started running bad it will run perfect. It does not throw a code. also repalced the ecm a year ago but not the prom. I have tryed to get it to the shop when it is ruuning like this , but by the time i get to the shop it is running fine.It seem like it is worse when I run gasahuall .It is like a snap of the finger & it will change when it does you hear it in the sound of the motor from good to bad or bad to good .

Kind of sounds like a bad alternator....I guess. A faulty alternator was what stopped me in my tracks before I left for college. If you can take the alternator off of the car yourself, try taking it to your local auto-parts store and let them run a test on it. The way you described it sounds as if it's an electrical problem. Just a guess but I'm sure you'll get much better advice from others here.

EDIT:

Also, other things to be on the lookout for:

sparkplugs that need replacing
Distributor cap, coil or entire system
sparkplug wires
corroded wiring

You also said your mpg readout goes to 99 miles per gallon, so possible it's your cars brain that's going bad?

Do you know anyone with a scanner or latop with software. It could be all kinds of things and without knowing where to start you may end up buying a million parts or beating your head against a wall for sometime.
