Today I went down to DRE in colo and i got a quote of $11K for a 383 bottom and a stage 3 top end with headers, TB assembled, removed and installed with 4.10 in the rear, he said somewhere around 500 HP. Input?
Big $ = big power.
I think a lot of the guys that know way more about engine building than I do will say that you can do it yourself cheaper. How much of that is for the new gears?

plus i'm only without my car for 2 1/2 weeks and I don't have to do anything except drop it off
Be sure that you have another car around to drive if this is your daily driver. Many shops will give you really aggressive dates to complete and then keep your car for much longer than advertised. Beware.
You mean 11K installed, right? Sounds a touch on the high side, but not outrageous. I'm not buying 500 HP unless it's got a disgusting cam in it though.

My question is: Will you still have your complete old engine? If, you do then I think it is a good deal in that if you were to decide to get a different vette you could swap the 383 out and still have most of your investment intact for an easy sell or swap into another car.
If its done right with premium parts and machine work and all you have to do is drop it off and wait two weeks it may be worth it. ,,,,Its easy to sink that much into a motor doing it yourself(ask me how I know...) If you can afford it, go for it
You also eliminate all the hassle and downtime of tuning that monster which in itself makes it look attractive
Edit: Oh, and this is coming from a do-it-yourselfer
$11k? Holy poop on a stick Batman! This better be 500hp and like 2k torque! You can but all crower / Dart / AFR / Manley etc. and build that for like 8 or so...
If you went all out and spent:
2k on full CNC heads
5k on 4340 long rod short block
1k on rearend
2k installation
1k tuning, odds and ends-W.P., F.P., good roller rockers, intake porting etc. youre' in the neighborhood.

dont go for it bro, most shops just because you own a vette the price jumps up so high, 11k for 383 is way way too much

1700 for the 383
1250 for new heads
230 for lt4 intake
300 for the cam
315 for TB 58mm
1240 for LT headers and exhaust
195 lifters
110 pushrods
2900 blueprint and porting
1450 removal and install
1100 for 4.10 gears
and free dyno tuning So you get to 11K real quick
I'm going to talk to him more on tue. about maybe just beefing up the bottom end instead of going to the 383 and saving some bucks with about the same output

Someone commented on the heads at 1250. While I agree that 1250 is cheap for heads, it looks like too much stuff is getting lumped into that 2900 and there may be an oppurtunity to negotiate a little bit. I would at least recommend getting a much more detailed quote than what you've posted here to understand where that 2900 is going. As a comparison, you can get fully ported AFR competition heads @ around 2K which is only 800 more than the 1250 - leaving 2100 for blueprinting. There has to be more work lumped in here (such as your machine work). If you went with top quality parts, the item that you listed as "1750 for the 383" could just be the cost of the pistons, rods, crank and bearings. Not sure, but a detailed quote will easily tell you that.
In addition, not doing the 383 and trying to get 500HP at the crank from a 350 will be very radical. The bigger cubes will get you there and still be much more streetable than the max effort 350.
Have you thought about getting a crate motor and dropping it in? https://secure.bcentralhost.com/prof...3_450drop.html
They say you can have one built to your specs. The major drawback is that you'd have to do the tuning or arrange to have it done.

Install on labor doesn't sound too bad..
I'm guessing they are porting your stockers?
Or are they buying a new casting and then porting?
A typical blueprint and ***'y costs about $750 from a good machinist
Curious to know what kind of parts used in the bottom end. Keep us posted
