How much oil should I put into the compressor, dryer, and evaporator on an 85. I tried a search but could find any info on this and I don't want to over oil this thing again.
I'm only guessing, but I have seen cans on eBay containing 2 oz of compressor oil and 2 oz of R-12.
that leads me to believe it is 2 oz.
Have you checked the shop manual for your car?
It depends on what you have done to the system. If your adding oil just because, there's no telling. It doesn't hurt to add an oz or so, each season, to make up for slow leaks if you have noticed oily collections at fittings and connections. On the other hand, If you have replaced the compressor, dryer and oriface, and/or other major components, you would treat it like a new (dry) system and add a full charge. On a GM R4 compressor on your 85, I believe it's about 3 1/2 to 4 ozs. but check the service manual to be sure. I'm unable to look it us right now. If you have just changed out one component such as a dryer, sometimes you can drain the device into a cup and measure the amount removed. Then add that much plus a tad more.
As a side, you don't have to put oil into each component as stated in your question. Generally, the compressor is filled and the overflow circulates throughout the system, just because there is no way to stop it. This helps, too, with adding too much oil (within reason) as the excess will end up in the drier/receiver.
