Default LT Hub bolt, is it really necessary?

Seriously, Iwas installing the HUB and when I was done I quickly assembled the acessory alumnum bracket to see if the belt lines up and it needed to go in almost 1 belt tooth in. Since the installer Kent Moore tool didnt work(no need to explain, has to do with custom crank.), I went ahead and installed the center hub bolt, and torqued it down to 75#'s(pre service manual) then lightly tapped it, and when it aligned up after a few tries, I retorqued the bolt, and snap, it broke. So, now I need to find a new bolt, a tap, etractor. The problem is my crank is drilled really deep, so an extractor will need to be a long one, and the drill.
So does that bolt need to be there, it is pressed on, and it wasnt easy getting it off. No oil or pre lube was used.

Yes, the hub bolt definately needs to be installed. If that hub worked loose at 6500 rpms, it would be a disaster.

Steve you must have a Callies crank? They tap the center bolt well into the main webing for additional strength. On the last engine I built it was 3.5" deep into the crank snout.

The old Chevy inline sixes (except for the 292) didn't use a bolt there. But that being said, I wouldn't want to be w/o it on a high performance V8.

I dont think Chevy coulda made it any more difficult to deal with that damn LT1 damper setup. And if you're using an ATI damper, they add to the degree of difficultly. Had to pull my nephew's engine when he cross threaded the damper bolt and couldn't get another one started. And if you've ever tried to install an ATI in the car you'd understand.

I guess I am glad I didnt go with ATI, as this is crazy. No more LT1's for me, its either L98 or LS1 types.

Man I agree!!!!!!!!! The LTx has got to be one of the most frustrating engines to work on in the car. There is almost no room to work, position tools, the stupid hub/HB has to be removed/installed on the vehicle separately, replacing the spark plugs & wires(especially on the left side) leaves you looking like you were in a fight with a leopard and the leopard won, the stupid water pump sits so tight on the left side you cannot see if you got the gasket on correctly, and on and on and on!

Well I feel better!

I always use a new bolt ,the old one always breaks.
ATI has the right bolt if you talk to them.
I got the right one for my cola crank from ATI and sure it was free.
NOT.
$399.00 PLUS THE BOLT.

400 bucks for the ATI and the bolt? They wouldnt sell you the bolt seperately would they?
I havethe Callies crank and it is a longer bolt, thats why the Kent Moore Tool didnt work either way.

With the cola crank the LT1 balancer would not fit and the cola crank is keyed.
I needed a balancer made for the LT1 with the proper clearence for a standard chevy crank.
The bolt and washer was $22.00 more
