Decided to replace the opti on my 93 and here is what I found. AutoZone has reman optis for $150 with a lifetime warranty. Then instead of using the 92-94 cap and rotor for $229 use the 95-97 cap and rotor for $139. The 95-97 cap and rotor fit the 92-94 opti with no mods required but it does include a vent line. So you have two options either cap the vent line or use the vent line and one vent hole from the opti, fab or buy a vacuum harness from the dealer, and you will have a vented opti for $289 with a lifetime warranty.
The venting system in the later opti-spark depends on flow-through ventilation -- the clean air from the air cleaner enters through the tube in the cap and exists through the tube in the metal body of the opti-spark base.
It is also my undertanding that the later opti-spark bearing has a better seal to prevent moisture/oil intrusion.
Using the later opti-spark cap and rotor on an early opti-spark base is really not the same thing.
I think the Dynotech unit encapsulates the later opti-spark advantages with the early opti-spark drive.
