HI, I have to disconnect the battery on my '86 peridocally to reset the computer.
This is because I push the clutch in, turn the key and nothing happens, the dash lights up but the engine wont turn over. This happens approx every 20 starts. And always at the wrong time, like when youve got a date with you.
Is this a common thing?
any ideas? thanks.
It's not the computer. The fact that, that tactic works, indicates an iffy connection where you are disconnecting the battery. It isn't the clearing of the computer that allows it start.
Disconnect both battery terminals and look at the mating surfaces. On mine they were very worn and not making good contact.
I dont think its the battery connection. Everything lights up but when you go to start it it doesnt even click.
Will deffinatly get out the wire brush and try tho.
It takes a hellva lot more amps to crank the engine than light the courtesy lamps. That is why the battery cables are 2 or 4 gauge rather then 12 gauge.
For some strange reason batteries are dying because the post that the cable screws into is breaking out of the battery case. Look all around the posts for signs of acid on them or in the battery tray. This problems acts just like some of the other post suggest a lose connection because in fact the post is losing contact with the battery.
I have replaced two batteries in the past year for this problem. And yes the radio worked the lights came on but the car would not start.
