Has anyone changed out a 700R4 to a 5 or 6 speed aftermarket tranny. I have an 85 Vette and want to shift gears after riding in a friends car. What is a good tranny set-up to consider? Thanks guys.
yes. do a quick search... it's been done, and others are doing it right now.
There are a few choices (in order of preference):
1) Factory ZF6, as used from 1989-1996.
2) TKO (Tremic 5 or 6spd)
3) Richmond 6spd
It will require:
1) Transmission
2) Pedals
3) Hydraulics
4) Driveshaft
5) C-beam
6) cutting trans tunnel (depending on install)
7) clutch assembly.
I also suggest you look at loosing the D36 rear diff. If you run a manual, with that transmission, in a drag race, it won't last all that long.
Expect any such upgrade, not including the diff, to cost about $3000.00. Add $2000.00 for the diff.
If it was me, I would sell the 85 and get a newer vette with a 6spd, but this depends entirely about what you have invested already. Judgeing from your avatar, it might be worth updating your existing vette.
Thanks Bogus. I always enjoy reading your replys and advice. I have taken many of them to heart. Thanks for the list of items related to the change out. I will dig further into the searches and see what I come up with. You are right.... I will have to keep my 85 after all the time, money, and sweat I have spent. But that's why I bought this car,...so I could do it all myself. I Love It! Thanks again man.
Anytime! It's not a bad idea to totally build a car to your liking... for 2 real good reasons - 1) You know the details! You did them! and my favourite? #2: Where else are you going to get THIS much performance for a total of about $20k invested?

Welp, seeing as this is already on the front page, I too have questions, because this will be the road I take, seeing as how I ditched the 700R4 myself while tearing down my Vette. You brought up an excellent point of discussion: being the hydraulics. I checked under the hood for the molded location where the slave cylinder goes (I was guessing this due to the fact that I thought the firewalls for the 85s' were identical regardless of transmission used), but I didn't notice an exact location. I really wish someone would perform this procedure and provide TONS of pictures of their step by step process. Routing the hydraulics is the only thing which concerns/worries me at the moment.

Bolting in the peddle sub-frame assemble and mounting the hydraulics is the simpler of the tasks to tackle.
You’ll need to remove the battery and cruise control servo to see the clutch slave indentions in the firewall. Their there, you just need to look hard.
Also, get a Roto-Zip. It works the best for going thru fiberglass

Thank you very much for the tip on the Roto-Zip! And when I get back to take a look at it, I'll look extra hard this time, I mean everything is gone in the engine compartment, can't believe I missed it. My questions seem way out there as far as coordination is concern. If I'm not asking questions about proper bolt size as replacements or asking about deleting the a/c, rest assured NOBODY'S advice given to me is in vein, as all of it I find helpful, I immediatelly copy down in a notebook (that sucker is 3 inches thick with notes, advice and pictures of procedures!).....like a stalker. Hmmm, I definently need to stop living at this website.
