i am putting in a 2400 stall tc with my 383 stroker. my builder has not put in the trans cooler. my question is where is the best prace to put it.? how difficult is it to install? photos would be nice if anyone has some. thanks jeff
The most efficient location is in front of the rad and condesor. Second best is between them. I opted for between. I figured that when I'm running the car hard like a track day I won't have the A/C on anyway. And it was easier to run the lines.
Front of radiator is best. The origional owner has his tranny shop put it in front of the power steering cooler. Didn;t work very well, too much heat. After blowing up that tranny moved up to a racing B&M unit, and put in front of the radiator. Don't have A/C. Cruise temps aren't much more then 160F so far. But haven't seen a day over 70F so far. Still figure it will keep it below 200 unless I'm running it really hard.
I just had mine installed. It was put in right in front of the AC condenser (they use these heavy-duty zip tie things to secure the cooler to the condenser... they came in the B&M kit). He tapped into the lower tranny line and basically made the trans cooler a part of the existing loop.
This shot was taken looking up at the AC condenser / tranny cooler front between the spoiler/ lower front facia.
Whatever you do, DON'T use heat to loosen a stuck traanny line fitting. This is what can happen:

Not trying to hijack the thread.....but, is there a problem with totally bypassing the trans cooler in the rad. and running 'just' a cooler in front of the condensor?

No problem as long as an appropriately sized cooler is used.
36,000 lbs Hayden cooler it's about 10" x 12" and i had to pull the front air dam down alittle to get it up there but fit perfect.
i had to fab hard line. the hard line you get is about 3" long and straight. well i piggy backed the cooler with the radiator cooler also and in order to make it work you need a hard line with a 180 degree bend in it. you might need to buy a longer peice of hose because you WILL use every millimeter of it doing the way i did.
shot of the hoses. i had to drill 2 5/8" holes thru the passenger side of the shroud.
i have the pusher and puller fan on my 87 coupe. if you line the cooler up just right the front fan will not hit it. matter of fact you don't even need zip ties with a 36,000 lbs cooler cause it's so big. they are just there to make sure it don't slide side to side and after 40k in miles since i've owned my vette with hard driving (anyone that knows me knows how i drive ) my tranny with 75k in total miles shifts just as hard as the day i bought it with only 30k in miles on her. 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th hits hard did i mention i manual shift this car with no shift kit or manual valve body also?

What kind of line can you use. Not trying to hyjack, but I am in the middle of this right now. Does the hose have to be high pressure or can you use braded line?
