I have an 88 vette with the ever popular 4+3 trans, and it started making a loud clicking sound in 1st gear. The car only has 51k on it, and the trans and OD were serviced last year before I bought it. The noise sounds like a bad U-joint, but I inspected them and they all look fine. The strangest part is that the noise only happens in 1st gear. Any thoughts? Thanks

Please describe exactly when the loud clicking sound occurs...
Is it immediately when the clutch is released?
When physically shifting into gear?
When letting out the clutch?
When accelerating?
When decelerating?
All the time?
When the O/D kicks in... There are several reports of the O/D kicking in in 1st gear...( mine is one of them) but that is more of a think than a click.
It happens as soon as I let the clutch out, and lasts until I shift into 2nd gear. It increases with speed/RPM. It is hard to tell where it's coming from, sometimes it sounds like it's coming from the Trans, and sometimes it sounds like it is coming from the rear end. It is definitely not going into O/D in 1st gear.
This sounds like a chipped gear with part of a tooth broken off. The only way I know to confirm is to pull the tranny side cover off and inspect. Out of the car of course. Not a fun job. IF the car does not make the noise in any other gear while moving,, I put my $$ on the chipped cluster gear. 99 Nassau Blue.
