Default used differential a good idea?

Contemporary Corvette lists used Dana 36's for $450. Is this a good idea? It sure seems like it would save a lot of money.

Ron guarantees his used parts. I have had great service from his company. The rear diff is a high milage unit that could last hundreds of thousands of miles. This assumes it doesn't come out of a drag car. Nonetheless, I would have no problem buying a used rear from Ron. I have twice.

Depends on what you are comparing it to.

vs. rebuilding yours? Zip rebuilds them for $600. I'd easily pay $150 for new bearings, seals, clutch pack, etc.

vs. buying a used one on ebay or this forum? 2.59s go for dirt cheap and 3.07s usually around $400.

What are the chances of getting a used D36 w/3.54 gears?

Pretty darn close to zero.

Would have to come out of a wreck, or from somebody who failed to plan ahead and got 3.54 and then found they needed a D44, in which case they probably abused the D36.

We did a GP with Zip a couple months ago for $750 for the rebuild with 3.54s. There's some chance they might still let you in on it. If they say the GP is over, tell them it's not over because they still have Steve's diff!

I have a Dana 44 I bought from Ron at Contemporary. He gives a 30 day warranty on it(it is used after all). I've had mine in for three years now(not many miles, mostly 1/4 mile blasts) and it has held up fine.

He lets you inspect it before you buy.
