Default Dual Mass Flywheel

Have a 90 vert, 6 speed, stock, 56K miles. I am getting a clunking sound from under the car. This sound starts after the car is warmed up, appears to go away when the rpm is raised to 1500 in nuetral ( do not hear it when driving). The car shifts smoothly. From under the car the sound appears to be coming from the bell housing area. Any thoughts, I thought that the dual mass might be failing, have not dealt with one of these before. There is no apparent oil leaks from the bell housing area. Help

clunking? Damn... that sounds a lot like the duel mass going out.

I suspect time might have caught up with the DM...

What you can do, take the inspection plate off the transmission. Then, using a flywheel tool, try to manually turn the flywheel. If it turns - especially by hand - the flywheel is dead.

Sadly, the starter will have to come off for this test. But it's a lot better then other options.

When my flywheel went south, it caused a lot of roar at highway speeds.

Default My small conveters failed

Might be pieces of the smaller catalytic converters.

On my 90 L98, I had a noise coming from the transmission area. It would rattle at idle and go away when RPM went up. When I removed the main converter I found some converter material in front of it that had come loose from the smaller converters upstream of it.

The rattle would go away because the increased speed of the exhaust would hold the chunks up against the inlet of the main converter.
