Default *****AC Delco Water Pump Warning*****

I replaced the WP on my LT1 last week. I purchased a brand new, in the box AC-Delco WP. Before I installed it I decided to blow some compressed air through the openings to clean out any dust/lint from packaging. What came out was a bird's nest of corkscrew shaped aluminum shavings! These obviously came from the machining process the WP went through during manufacture. I then pulled the thermostat and front cover and found even more. The total amount was about the size of a golf ball.

I cannot believe that AC-D does not have an inspection process in place that would allow this mess to stay in the pump during final assembly.

Anyway, I thought I would pass this on.

Scary stuff there, thanks for sharing! Just curious, but how much does an AC Delco pump for an LT1 go for? I got a new GM pump for my 92 from Sam Taylor for $153. I haven't installed it yet, but before I do I'll pull the thermostat and take a look inside. Just looking down the passages, I didn't see anything that shouldn't be there. Anyway, good luck!

I would never have thought to do that with a new part. If that had made it into my engine ...

I'd mail that ball of aluminum shavings to GM with a letter explaining where it came from.

Wow. That's NUTS!

Thanks!!!! That's a GREAT catch! Sad, but great.

That could do all sorts of damage to and engine... gum up the radiator, jam in the t-stat... block up a cooling journal. Damn.

I agree with jfb, I would put that in an envelope and send it, registered, to GM Corporate.
