Default It's first breath!

Well, finally got the 406 in and it took it's first gulp of air and fuel. Fired right up. No leaks and sounds strong. Just thought I would share

This is the back up motor I assembled 8 years ago. I was a die hard weekend warrior so a spare was needed . The compression is 11.1 to 1. Heads are edelbrock with a weeks worth of porting. (Thanks Bob Lauer @ L&B Engine Development.) Cam is a crower hydraulic. 221 @.050 on intake. 234@.050 on exhaust. Lift is approx 570 intake and 595 exhaust. Picked it for the nitrous. Hooker headers and a superram bombo. Previous 383 went 12.02 and 10.97 on spray. Stayed conservative with this new motor. I hope to pick up a tenth or 2 over my 383. The old numbers were with stock tuning. Hope to pop the new chip in and gain a bit. Low dollar combo using left over parts in the garage. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will run well. My local track will not open till mid may. May be takin a road trip to Beaver Springs.

I spoke too soon. Got the leaks and a starter problem as well. Small problems for sure.

Pete, assuming the leaks are intake-related, where did you find them on your SR?

Who's doing the tuning on your chip?

Great to hear you got it all assembled! Looking forward to seeing it

Actually, the leak was coolant. I think I found it. The rear crossover hose seemed to be the area. I guess I put the hose clamp right on the raised rib on the pipe. Moved it and it seemed fine. I also had to "profile" (grind a bunch) The tip of the bendix gear on the starter. It was just touching the flywheel and all the shims in the world didn't help. Other than the usual gold glitter in the oil things look good. I fired it on a 30 degree morning so I used 10-30 oil for the break in. Oil temp never exceeded 210 and coolant never exceeded 205. Boy I hate seeing that gold in the oil pan though!

I thought you were doing another 383? Guess things changed
Were still trying to get Phil at Numedia to let us know about the track rental on June 18th. I wonder why they have postponed opening. We've had some great weather for them. I want to head out there on a friday night, let me know when your heading out(if they ever open)

Rich, the 383 is the new back up for the 406. I sleep better with a spare on the stand. Numedia is having "legal" issues and I cannot comment. If the do open next friday, and they likely will not, things should go smoothly. If not , it should open by June

PS: Keep checking the schedule right up till the last minute. Things have been changing with 24 hrs or less notice.

Jesse, as soon as I get some facts regarding the track opening, I will let everyone know. Very lucky for me to have this track so close to home. I just wish the season would start a bit earlier. Mid may is too late for me! I will be Beaver bound,.
