i got it goin after the rebuild, running it real easy around the block. when i was driving it around i noticed the oil temp rising and approching critical but not there yet. is this normal for the break in procedures and what is the proper break in procedures?
Oil temp rising is normal to a point. I just ran my new engine today and drained the oil and filter after 25 miles. Lots of fine trash develops during break in. Dump the oil as often as you can in the first 500 miles. I do the 1st about 25 miles. Second at 100 miles and third at 500 miles. Probably overkill but it gets the crap out.
ok i'll dump the oil like you do but this motors only got like 5 miles on it. i was thinking the oil temp sensor is screwed up. the oil temp sensor is loctated just above the oil filter correct?
Even though there is only 5 miles, you will find gold glittery trash in the oil. Do not let this panic you. Chunks are bad but fine metal will happen for the first few oil changes. The sensor is located just above the oil filter on my 87. I assume the 91 is the same. Should be a single spade connector with a green and white wire going to

Your words "approaching critical" concern me. Just what kind of oil temps are we talking about? Even on an initial run, oil temps should not be much above normal, if at all.
personally i think its the sensor itself, but what would be the indication of high oil temp if the sensor did not work. rough motor, smoke from the hood etc.....

Low oil pressure would be a an indication, from the oil getting very thin from the high temps.
