They are the same thing that AutoZone or practically any other autoparts store will use. I don't recommend spending the $$$ on one. There is software that can be loaded on a laptop or some other movable computer that can scan the codes for you. I can't recall what it is called off the top of my head, but I'll let you know when I find it.
If this IS the device I think it is, about 35 bucks, it just lets one tap into the ALDL codes underneath the steering wheel...The information center lites blink...to mark out the codes. The included book has the codes translated for you...i dont think its worth the money, people here on the CF say you can do the same thing with a paperclip, and then look up the codes here on a thread. I bought one and was left with the feeling it is an expensive paper clip.

Spend your money on a paper clip and a HELMS service manual. Not only will it decipher the codes, it has trouble shooting charts to help you track down the cause without throwing money (unnecessary parts) at the problem. By the way, the Helms, is the Chevrolet Factory Service Manual. Helm Inc. is under contract to produce it for Chevrolet.
If ALL it does is read codes, then it's not worth the expense. A paper clip will do that job.
But if it shows the actual running numbers of the sensors, BLMs, timing, 02 activity, then ABSOLUTELY get it. It'll save a lot of time and effort in tracking down the cause of a problem.
What you want is a Scanner, not merely a Reader; two different animals.
