Default What a nightmare Pt II

Finished the teardown this morning and found my (soon to be ex) Mechanic ripped the WP seal during installation. So oil everywhere including on my nice new Opti. Well he installed that wrong too and when he pulled the cap to look at the rotor he broke my seal job on it. Ok bad enough but it gets worse.

When he put the cap back on after finding that he indeed did manage to install it with the rotor 90 deg off he managed to strip the top right opti cap screw. So when I tried to start it this morning, it was missing. I new the opti was toast and after I took it apart to see the oil inside that leaked through the cover .....

The only good to come of this was I did find the source of my vibration as after I got it started with the balancer off I had no vibration. I have read where the LT1 is balanced by the flywheel not the HB and I guess I proved it today. The downside of this discovery is a new HB costs around $400( can you say corvette tax) and is not interchangable with any other LT1 It's only a pulley geeze.

Total cost of this lesson so far $575

Cost to replace the opti and HB$900

Lesson learned if you want something done right do it yourself

I am going with the dynaspark should have done it in the first place this is what happens when you try to save a buck

At least the vette will be fixed. Question about your vibration, was it all the time or only at certain rpm ranges?

Mostly around 2k rpm but I felt it around 1k sometimes too. I will report back when everthing is right to confirm the vibration is totally gone.

Redeasysport,

ASP makes a underdrive HB that is cheaper than stock. I have one in my 1992. Just check to see if you have a single or double grooved belt.

The swap is easier with the single groove belt (set-up) as you don't have to change other pulleys.

Assuming that your current ballancer is in good shape, why not get it zero ballanced by a local shop? Should be very easy for them to do.

What do you mean by zero ballanced? I never heard of that before.

It is not in the best shape the rubber has a crack in it and looks dry rotted I could send it out to be rebuilt but rebuilds have bit me before. I wish us LT1 Vette owners would quit getting handled.I have a Pioneer LT1 balancer to return to Summit it will bolt on my Hub but is the wrong offset for a Vette( does not line up with the pulleys)

LT1 hub aren't keyed to the crank, so it may have just been installed incorrectly, go figure.

Call Chris May at Superior Chevy is a great source for parts - 1.800.782.8267. Tell him you're a forum member and that I said hi.

TBH94 - zero balance is like balancing a tire. Match balancing is when you match 2 items to the same inbalance. It's how you balance a flywheel. If a flywheel has 3 oz inbalance opposite the keyed point, it needs 3 oz opposite the keyed point. This is regardless of the weight of the initial item.

Well I just orderd a balancer from Venture http://www.ventureproducts.com/pictu...pers%20GM2.htm
For $235 new instead of rebuilt. Quite a savings from $370 so if anyone needs one if you want new this is the place to get it

Go with the Dyna-spark....
Do the job yourself, I don't want ANYONE working on my car but me!

It is sad, but true, people just aren't careful with other people's cars
(although I am sure that it is not 100% true).

I'm not master mechanic by any means, but if you have:
- the slightest mechanical ablity
- a GM service manual
- the proper hand tools (other than a torque wrench, nothing special)
- time
- patients (spelling?)
You can do this job. (I am sure you can, you know it too.)

It sucked at times, but now that mine is done....yahooooo!

Call me if you want to talk about this.

I hear ya Tim I only did this because I did not have the time to do it myself. I am in the process of DIY'ing it got it tore down and am waiting for parts to arrive. It really was not that hard just did not want to dig into it myself. I learned my lesson the hard way . Now the weather is gonna get cold and rainy when I could have done it myself and been driving it the last week instead of looking for parts and watchin her sit. There is an upside though I found several other things that needed fixing that I am doing while I wait.

I would at least inform the guy (he's not a mechanic) that damaged so much money what he did.

He won't admit he did it anyway even though I was there watching most of the time. What he screwed up he did when I went to look for a balancer at Summit. He argued with me for 45 min that he installed the Opti right and I screwed it up then he took it out and put it back in right and the car started. I called him and left a message about the oil leak but he never returned it so I am sure he knew he stripped the Opti bolt. Not worth the waste of my breath at this point and I really do not want to talk to him probably never.....
