Talk about a bad day. Thrilled with the new found power and drivability of my new 406 and the crank loses it's thrust. .004 end play turned into .016 in less than 100 miles. This is right after my wife throws away my custom programmed chip. Didn't even get a chance to pop it in the ecm before it vanished.

There goes the thrust bearing... #5... See ya... That sucks, dude; time to pull her out.

Yep. As soon as I saw the dial indicator sweep across the face of the dial, I knew exactly what it was. Sux bad. I am not sure if the bearing is bad or a damaged thrust surface on the crank. Either way, out she comes.
Brad, Considering that I used a know good torque converter, flexplate and balancer, that leaves the crank and bearing as the only 2 possibilities. The endplay checked out fine when assembled, so that leaves me suspecting the bearing. The odds of a bearing being defective are very slim. However, the odds of a new set of hydraulic lifters not having springs in them is a 1 in a million shot as well. I would avoid standing next to me if we are outdoors and you hear thunder.
Well Pete, an least you are able to find some humor in it! Let us know the lowdown after you pull the pan...
True. I am actually more upset that my prom was tossed than the motor issues. Clearly it should be the other way around. As Brad said, time and money will fix it. This is not the first time I have had motor issues. If it were easy, everyone would have a 10 second car. You gotta earn it I guess. Gonna take a few days to cool off and then have at it. I got a new digital camera for christmas. If I see anything cool after I pull it apart I will try to post pics of it.
May i ask, what made you recheck your end play? I set mine when i built the engine and never looked back. Should this be checked periodically or did you have some symptoms.

Ralph,
I was sure to install a new hi torque mini starter as a precaution due to the extra heat I expected from the new 406. After my first test ride I heard a scraping noise pulling in the garage. I found that the tip of the bendix was just nicking the rotating flexplate. With no foward or rearward adjustment, I remover the starter and used a dremel to "profile" the end of the bendix. I had about .025 between the 2. After 100 miles of normal driving I heard the grinding noise again. When I saw no air gap and found the starter was bolted tight, I knew to check crank endplay. The prybar made it feel like .050 but the dial indicator said about .015. My notes say I had .004 in the 3 spots that I checked during assembly. To lose the thrust in a new motor is odd, to say the least. I will figure it out when I get it apart. For reference purposes, the old 383 removed from the car had .003 new and .0035 when pulled. The .0005 wear is typical. I am still in disbelief.
