Default 89 brake lights will not light up

This is an 89' coupe. Tail lights and turn signals work. When the brake pedal is pressed the light on top of the car lights up but the four tail lights do not. Also, the cruise control does not work. I think the two may be related. Can anybody tell me what is wrong and what I need to do to fix this? Thanks a lot guys!
Zack

P.S. I already tried replacing the brake switch and it did nothing to correct the problem.

There is the brake switch on the brake pedal. From there a Lt Blu wire goes to the Hi-Level brake light and a Wht wire goes to the Turn/Hazard Switch Assy in the steering colum.

Unplug the Wht wire and see if there is power when the pedal is depressed. If not replace the brake switch; if so investigate the Turn/Hazard Switch Assy.

There is another switch on the brake pedal that deactivates the cruize control when the pedal is depressed. It has a Gry/Wht wire in and a Gry/Blk wire out.

Unplug the Gry/Blk wire and see if you can set cruize. If so check the setting on the switch and replace the switch if the setting is ok. Else, check for a vacuum leak into the cruize control module above the battery.

I had this same thing happen on my 87. The brake lights all worked fine when I tested them in the garage, but only the high light worked on the road. It turned out to be a scraped wire inside the column that shorted out only when the column was pulled down. I had the turn signal switch replaced, and the problem went away. Some time later, I went to use the cruise control and it was out. It turned out that I had mis-adjusted the brake pedal switch when I was fiddling around with the brake lights. The book said to push down on the pedal and push the switch body toward the pedal, then push up on the pedal to set the switch position. Cruise works fine now.
