I am looking for a rebuilt or used 700R4 to put in my son's stock 1984. Will any 700R4 "plug and Play" or do I have to look for a specific model of the 700R4? Any thing else I need to be aware of if we are considering buying "used" and replacing our selves?
The only primary difference I know of for a Corvette 700R4 is the servo that allows it to shift into 4th gear under full throttle. They're cheap to buy if the one you don't get one doesn't have it tho!
The vette tranny's have the tailhousing and a shorter rear output shaft. Also a 84 would have had a 27 spline input shaft and the 85 and up vettes had the 30 spline input shaft, they require different torque converters. The later model trans the better it is with the 700's. I have a built up 700 in my vette that has the 27 spline input shaft and everything else is upgraded, I like it but I have a f-body trans laying around with a 30 spline shaft and I may swap. It all depends on how much power you are running. I want to run a 3500 stall which is why I might use the larger input trans. I've gone through many trans ideas so good luck on yours. The original trans in my car was the 4+3 and that trans was a piece of work.
The Corvette transmissions have some desirable internals, that others don't, but that doesn't change the "interchangeability. The easiest way to spot a Corvette transmission is by the tail shaft housing and it's provision for the "C" beam. In similar length output shaft length transmissions, the tail shaft housing can be swapped to use the non-Corvette trans in the Corvette.
Actually, the 27 to 30 input shaft spline came DURING the 1984 model year. Early '84s (like mine) came with 27 splines, and later '84s had 30.
If you don't mind shipping stuff, check out Mad Dog Transmissions. The guy is great with requilds, he did mine. Veteran / military discount of 10% and a pretty good guy too. (727) 943-7742. He used to do alcohol racing. Tell him Mike with the black 'vette named Black Ice sent 'ya

I haven't read everything here, in detail, but scanning it, I didn't see any mention of the 1988 mods to the castings and some internal parts which were the result of failure history. Cases were beefed up in 88 and later 700R4 and is a worthwile fact to keep in mind when selecting a replacement.
