The best trouble shooting guidance is in the GM shop service manual for the year of your Vette. You will need a multi function volt meter, a little understanding of DC electricity. The service manual will take you step by step, saving you a lot of time.
Code 36 indicates you have a problem with a "MAF burn off relay". Code 33 indictates the MAF itself incurred an electrical event, low/high voltage that could be caused by a problem with a relay or relay connection.
Before you start buying stuff, check your MAF and MAF burn off connectors. If you are lucky, you have a connector that is not fully seated (has come loose from the MAF or the MAF relay/relays) or is dirty.
If your connectors are ok, then buy the GM shop manual or ask a friend/forum member who has one to copy the code 33/36 diagnostic testing procedures for you.
If you are mechanically inclined and like to work on cars, buy the shop manual because you will have other issues down the road. Even if you can't fix the problem, you'll know generally what needs to be done before you take the car to a shop or dealership. More knowledge you have about the problem, better chance in getting an honest repair.
I've been fighting an intermittent problem with my 85, code 33, and the shop manual has really been helpful. You must have a newer model than 85 because the 85 relays are internal within the burn off module itself and do not set a code 36; only 33 and 34. Code 36 in the newer model is as I understand it, burn off module relay specific.
Hope this helps. I am an accountant by profession but enjoy fixing basic problems without the help of a technician. I've save a lot of money over the last 16 years with the car by having the shop manual.

He is a friend of mine and a newby on the forum. His vette is an 89'. Began hesitating when he got in the throttle and gave a check engine light. I gave him the procedures to pull the codes and he got a 33 and 36.
I was not sure what to tell him on troubleshooting and diagnosing the problems. I knew you guys would know.
Ok, there are 2 relays behind the battery on the firewall, replace those first, together they shouldnt be more than $25. Check all other connections at the MAF and to those relays.
See if the code comes back, if it does, its going to be the MAF sensor itself, which you need to buy new.
