Ok, just dropped the exhaust pipes off the car getting ready for a set of Hedders, Random Tech Cats, Cut Outs, and Flowmasters. Just a quick question...
How many cats were on the 89 when she was stock? It looks like there were a pair right after the stock headers on the car that were replaced with just pipe. Then there was the huge thing in the middle that I thought was the cat. It was the one with the air tube to it. However, when I got it off the car it's just one big hollow section. No cat elemet or anything. Does not even look like there was anything in it but the air tube. Was this a cat at all or a chamber for the sound?
<EDIT>
OK, So I actually grabbed my service manual and checked out the section on the exhaust. It shows that there were three cats on the car. Two pre-cats and a central cat. Looks like the front ones were removed and the middle on is either one with no elemets in it or they did a great job of gutting it. It looks so clean I would have never thought that there was anything in it.
</EDIT>

Reason: Change info that I found....
When I took my mufflers off I looked into my main cat and found the same thing you did - the big empty hole ! It was very neatly done also.
I guess that was a popular mod.
your car came with 3 converters, 2 pre-cats and 1 main. someone gutted the main converter out, most likely to gain HP. the computer chip may have been replaced with an off road chip, so better check it out before you put the new converter and it gets ruined and clogged.
