Default Torque converter question

I have decided to get the power I have to the ground before I do a major engine upgrade. I have 373 gears and MT street radials on the way. Its an 86 A4 that will only be used for playing around local 98% of the time and maybe track 2%. Is a good torque converter worth the $$$?
I had the tranny rebuilt and upgraded but I went cheap on the TC. They said its a 2600 stall but It actually feels like it lost power.

If it is worth the money what should I be looking for? I see alot out there listed for LT1s but not many for mine. Are they the same?
I know a D44 upgrade is in my future also.

As long as you get one for a 700r4/4L60 and not the 4L60E you'll be fine. I dont know if the E version has differences with the TC working, maybe it will work.

3.73 gears are too much in my opinion, unless youre going miniram. Superram doesnt require more than 3.07s.

With the L98, with or without a SR, you do not need more than 2600. I wouldnt go more than 2400 myself.

I have a Vigilant 2600 rpm stall in my mostly stock Crossfire. At the drag strip, the converter will be worth far more, in ET reduction, than the gears. For daily driving the gears will make the car a lot more fun. Once you launch, the converter is pretty much out of the picture. The gears affect all driving.

I think your stock '86 TC has a 2,000rpm stall; with 3.73s out back and a L98 that should give you plenty of low end grunt.

Since most of your driving is street you need to consider how it hooks up now; higher stall will just make it harder to launch.

If you go higher than 2,400rpm you will also need an extra tranny fluid cooler.

What kind of short times are you pulling now?

Thanks guys, I dont know the short time yet since it hasnt been to the track. I was planning on taking it to the track after some of my mods are completed.

It looks like the 2400-2600 is the way to go but aside from the stall is there any real dif in TCs? From what im hearing It seems like the Mt drag radials will hook up for me. Does one have a better torque multiplier than another? Is a 10 inch better than standard?

The smaller you go the less inertia to spin up but the more heating or at least less heat dissipation. So, if you go below a 12" even with 2,400-2,600rpm you may still be advised to install the cooler.

I'm not really up on TC brands as I had a local shop install a modified GN TC when they did a rebuild.

Since you don't have hook up issues, I think you will notice a nice gain in launch from even 400-600rpm increase. After I went from the stock 1,500rpm to 2,000rpm my short times came down from a best of 2.02sec to a best of low 1.8s and a typical of low 1.9s to high 1.8s.

I run the Vigilante 5 disc converter. $1500.00 When I manually lock it in 4th it puts a big grin on my face.
