turn nut counter clockwise until clatter and 1/4 turn back.
Don't go more then 1/4 turn, the valvelifters have to pump up .
...just my 20cents worth, but my understanding is that you should NEVER go BACK on an engine...incorrect cam chain tension results...always KEEP going around clockwise again if you overshoot, say, the timing marks...
No offense intended, but there ARE times when it's ok to swallow ones pride and get a GM dealer for example, to do it for you...YES it will cost, and maybe even a tilt-tray to get it to the garage BUT at least they can sort it. Again, not casting aspertions on you personally dude, but if you or anyone is totally NOT very confident, it may be chaeper and more reassuring to farm this one out.
Jelloshot,
if you don't mind me asking, why won't you use the running method?
(I use it with no probs, no oil mess, I'm just curious)
89,
Not saying that is incorrect to adjust while running, it is ok to do so. I used to do it that way myself. Once you follow the generals instructions on how to do it with the engine off and cold, you'll never do it while running again. The first time i used the engine off method, i was truly amazed. I turned the key, the engine started on a half crank, purred like a kitten immediately. Not a single tick to be heard and never had to remove the valve covers. I would recommend this procedure to anyone who has never tried it. The results are pure bliss. ( i guess the general knows what he's doing, so it shouldn't have really amazed me, but it did)
