I am gonna put together a 383 for my '85. I am going to put on my ported and polished heads with 2.02" intake valves. Stock exhaust. Will probably remove the MAF screens and eventually put in a K&N filter with a cut lid. I have a cam that I would like to put in but was curious what others thought about this cam. It is just a hydraulic cam
This is an Eginetech ES1014R cam

I have to pass Ca. emissions with this car. Any thoughts on how this setup would work out or hp estimates?
It's not much different than a stock 350 cam. So for a 383 it'll be too short in duration. Defintely not enough cam for a 383.
You can choose a better cam, with more duration and lift and still pass emissions testing.
There are several that will do the job, including the ZZ9, two of LPE's offerings, the 211 and the 219, etc. Keep the .050 duration under 220 @ .050 and the lobe separation angle at 112 or higher

The 74211 cam is a good cam for a mild 383 and will definitely pass emissions. The 219 has a noticable idle and should pass emissions easily as well with the right tune.

I have no clue about selecting the proper cam. I have to depend on others for this so I thought I would poll the experts. This is an over-the-counter cam from Schneider Racing Cams.
A modded TPI with 1.6 rockers and a 211 or zz9 cam should make a great street motorthat easily passes CA smog.
TPI cars like cams in the 208-220ish range unless you go SR.
I don't plan on any other mods other then possibly changing the mufflers. I am only doing these because I have these parts. I am gonna stay with the stock TPI and will get a chip burned for this setup. I am currently running the Ford/Bosch 19# yellow top injectors in the car.

Did anyone notice this member has a non roller engine? Unless I am wrong his 85 was equipped with a flat tappet cam. In this case converting over to a roller cam can be expensive. He can however install a LPE/Accel 74212 which as a 214/224 duration cam. This cam will pass emissions and will provide a decent improvement over the stock TPI cam. And, its basically the same cam as Schneider Racing cams from the specs above. Heck I didn't notice either, guess I am spending too much time bent over a fender these days

I would find the biggest cam that will pass emissions for a 350. Considering you are building a next step up bigger motor that big cam for a 350 won't be so big in a 383.
Iam with tjwong and jake highly experienced members,
i just did lot of upgradation for my 85 vert and bought
Tpis 700-135 flat tappet cam 224/224 and .495/.495 lift
very happy with it little lopey but i like that little rough idle
But if i were u i will buy retro fit lifters, shorter pushrods,
and right springs and convert it to a roller block and either
go for ZZ9 cam or Lpe 74211 inorder to stay with TPI setup
and still be able pass emmsision.
Probably 74211 is best as it cost less than ZZ9 cam.
Also if u want to convert to roller than
Lpe offers Retro fit lifters for $499.00 but
Tpis offers for $299.00 u decide other parts not that expensive
unless u want to go comp cam roller rockers $269.00 for 16.
This will actually be a hydraulic lifter engine. I have a shortblock from an 87 Vette with a roller cam but I didn't want to spend the money to stroke that motor since I have the 383 allready built. It is an externally balanced two piece seal motor.

I would use the 214/224 cam you mentioned instead of the one in the quote above. In a 383, this should idle like a stocker, have a TON of low end torque, and should easily pass emissions. Since you currently have a stock TPI and exhaust, any more cam than this would be a total waste of money. However, if you later decided to upgrade the intake and exhaust, you would have enough cam to make lots of mid-range power.
Admittedly, I'm biased on this particular point, but in choosing a cam company, I only consider CompCams, period. There are a lot of reasons, like their cutting edge technology, quality control, etc.
I'm not trying to bad mouth other cam companies, but why not go with the best cam maufacturer in the industry, CompCams. He**, even Harvey Crane says CompCams is. I definitely respect a man who's that honest about a competitor's products.

Schneider grinds the cams that CompCams sells. Not only that but they are made here in San Diego and I don't have to pay anything for shipping. I ordered one today. It will be done on Tuesday.
