Default Newbie pulling codes...

Ok I'v read over the how to's on pulling codes but evidently I'm not fluent in Corvette just yet . Here's the codes that I pull when I short pin 4 to 12.

1. c 12
1. ---
9. h72
9. ---
a. ---
1.0

I've only my 96 for about 3 weeks now and the service soon light came on once before but went back out the next day. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Default Update

Ok I figured out that the h72 is a historic code for:

LCD Dimming output circuit open or shorted to ground

or

Loss of vehicle speed sensor

Now my next question is, how do I clear the historic code short of pulling the negative on the battery? I read on a previous post about cycling to 4.7 with the trip/od button and holding Eng/Met, but I didn't see a 4.anything. As I cycle it goes from 1 to 9 to A.

Default update 2

Ok, I figured out how to clear the codes by advancing to the module.7 and holding the eng/met button, but even after clearing the codes I still have the service soon light on. I guess my next step is to take somewhere and have them pull the codes since I'm obviously missing something.

I wouldn't mind either buying a scan tool or going the "software and cable" route for my laptop, but I'm having problems finding software for the 96's.

Section 9 is the ABS/TCS section. Code 72 is "Serial Data Line Malfunction". In the well behind the driver's seat is the braking controller. Your car is complaining that it can't communicate, via the serial data line, with the CCM or PCM. Check for a broken wire coming out of this controller.

On a '96 section 4.0 is skipped because of OBD II.

Default hmmm...

Well I checked the controler in the well, I didn't find any broken wires and all the connections were tight. I pulled the codes again and all I'm getting is the C-12 in module one which is normal from what I've read. Modules 9 and A are both showing "---" but my service soon light is still on. Do I need to disconnect the battery to clear everything?

If all that stuff is clear and you still have a check engine light then there is a code set in the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) which is not accessible using only a paper clip. This is the missing OBD II section I mentioned. Cheapest way to check is AutoZone or similar. Have them pull the codes from the PCM. They will be listed as "P0141, P0323, P1114" etc. These are standardized DTC codes for OBD II. Once you have the numbers we can look up the meanings. BTW, unhooking the battery will not clear the codes.

Default Thanks for the Info...

You have helped me out a lot Rebuilder. After I posted that last message, I went out for a drive and after about 5 minutes the service engine soon light went back out and has been out all night. I'm still planning having someone hook up a scanner and see if there is something I'm missing. I'll post the codes as soon as I get them.

I had read somewhere on this forum where if you disconnected the battery for a min or so it would reset everything but I see that I must have missed read that. Thanks for the heads up, I'll remember it.

This one is for you Rebuilder....
