I have a '91 that I am considering changing the steering column, mine has play in the tilt mechanism. Will a later model fit and the wiring connect without any problems?
Thanks
This play in the tilt mechanism is a pain in the butt for most of us. I've reasearched it a fair amount but haven't torn mine down yet to really figure out what to do about it. My searches of the forum have pulled many threads on this subject. The word on the street appears to be that there is an inexpensive repair kit available from GM, but there are two part numbers and nobody said what the difference was. The other word on the street is that the legth of the steering column changed at some point due to a change in the depth of the airbag. Also, the lettering chanegd from yellow to white and that may be a problem for you.
So the gist of what I've seen is that the repair kit is probably your best bet as there are a number of problems with trying to retrofit the later model columns.
I believe the bearings are the first to go. Many folks lean on the wheel to get out of the car and this wears out the bearing assy.
In my case the steering column was shot and I had to replace it.
Thanks for the replies. I have replaced the bearings and this helped a little. I don't think the play is all that bad, but the vehicle inspector failed the car because of the play.
The play is probably in the base bolts...95% of the time they are the culprit,,,You have to extract the pivot pins to get to em.There are 4 of them...You won't need to buy any parts... If you were local we fix them all the time
on my 90 it was the housing that was the problem the pivot holes were out of round so the pivot pin would creep out. pretty exspensive for the parts so I just got the whole column it was much cheaper and you have a whole column for parts.
