Default 12 v switched source in engine bay

I know little of wiring an auto. But that's not stopping me! But i do have a question.

I am installing a Painless weatherpoof 7 circuit fuse box under the hood to power some added gauges , NOS relay, etc. I have already run all the gauge wires and NOS heater wire, etc. and the wires from the switch panel i rigged up through a hole in the firewell located at the drivers feet area. The new fuse box is located in the DS headlite well, (and no, it does not interefere with operation of the headlite.

The fuse panel requires a red wire to battery, which i am going to add to the "jump" site near the battery, and also needs a pink wire to go to a switched 12 volt source.

It is recommended that it be attached to the PS fuse box with a little metal deal that is inserted into the hot side of a fuse. However, I do not want to go through the fire wall, etc. if there is a place under the hood. Thanks!

What year car?

on the 85-89 you can get power form the swtiched side of the Fuel pump relay? I used that from my heated O2 before.

Mark,
On my 1990's alternator plug harness there's 3 wires, a larger red constant 12v, a small pink w/black stripe low mili-amp current with key on and a medium size solid brown wire that is key activated 12v 10 amp fused at fuse panel at slot labled "gauges".

You may be able to tap in here to this brown wire if the demand is not too high for what you need.

Another spot I know of is the small pink w/black stripe wires that go to temials "D" at your fan relays. They are turrned on with key. If memory serves me well (and it may not ) I think they may also feed from "gauges" fuse but cant really be definete on that one without going and checking.

if the current demand is high, you could use a relay, tie one side of the relay coil to the "gauge" wires the other end to ground and then rount the suffuient 12 volt supply through the relay... it will switch on and off with your ignition. I use the fuel relay off the pressure sensor, I'm not sure thast earlier C4's have that. It ison th oil pressure switch, as long as you have above 3 pounds of oil pressure the fuel pump will stay activated.

hope this helps,

MO

Thanks! I will check into that as well. Off hand, i dont know where that relay is, but i do have the Helms manual. Im also thinking i might run it back through the hole I have in the firewall to a source within the cabin, like the stereo head unit.
