I recently had the clutch replaced on my 96 C4. It had 96,700 miles on it at the time and was the original clutch. After, replacing the clutch it would go inot gear very nicely and stopped a racketing sound it had when I pushed the clutch in all the way. During the install I inquired as to whether the flywheel needed to be replaced or machined etc. The Chev dealer where it is being worked on had it machined. Anyway, when I got it back the first day I was babying it around town and it all seemed fine. The next day I let the RPM's build in second gear and it had a loud vibration it never had before at 4500 RPM. I promptly took it back to the dealer where the tech rotated the drive shaft to see if that was what was causing it. Needless to say, it didn't fix it. I left it with them and they called me requesting to replace the flywheel. I agreed to pay for the parts and they will cover the labor and discount me the cost of machining the original. If this doesn't work, does anyone know what could be causing this vibration. I mean it is loud as all hell, I am not dreaming it up etc. Why would a freshly machined flywheel cause it? Are they full of ****? Any GM techs out there care to defend these folks?
You cant resurface the dual mass flywheel. The tolerances are now all screwed up. You have to get a new one. Dont pay the $1000 they may want for the oem replacement. A light weight, performance fw is only like $450.

Soooo...the dealership machined a piece that should not have been machined? If that's the case, this is just pitiful. The dual mass has been in consistant use by GM for well over a decade and they still manage to screw up.
Good luck with this, Ryan. I hope they at least sold you the flywheel at cost. That would be the very least they should do.
The corvette factory service manual clearly states that the dual mass flywheel is not servicable - what's wrong with this chevy dealership??? At least they're doing the right thing in charging you only for the part and refunding the prior resurfacing cost. I'd hesitate to go back to this service department ever again.
