Anyone know the fix for an 84-89 instrument cluster that intermitedly blanks out? When you slap the dash it comes back on. I know it's like dirty contacts, or a bad ground. I read what needs to be done a long time ago, but have forgotten it since I never had to do it.
Your plug for the cluster has come lose.
Remove the bezzel center of the car.
Behind it yoiu will find a plug and 3 or 4 of the connections in the printed circuet have come uncliped.
Just streighten the printed curcet and plug the connector back in.

They take suprisingly little abuse before the LCD panes break. Replacement panes are pricey.
Home repairs are easier than you'd think. I did mine inside two hours. Used a magnifying glas to inspect all the solder joints. Found a bunch of joints on the interconnect junction had gone bad and it only took ten minutes of soldering to get it right. I started to hit every joint on the power board until the magnifying glass appeared... Just goto the sites that everyone has mentioned here, read 'em through, and get to work.
I used the The 84-89 Digital Cluster Repair Guide Project by Bryan A. Thompson. It has some good illustrations and easy to understand text.
