Who makes the best harmonic balancer for a sbc that revs to 6800 rpm? I have seen a lot of cheap ones lately but I want to know if they work well. I have seen people using fluidampers or the TCI rattler and they seem good but do the cheaper ones measure up?
I have 2 friends who are reputable engine builders. They both agree on bhj balancers and ati balancers as being the 2 best. I have no opinion, I just trust theirs.
I was looking at the ASP under drive pulley to replace my ruined stock combo, but now I believe it has to bolt to the stock hub and that's the part that's bad.
I just had an ATI put in mine and it is definitely a stout piece. Both my engine builder and my machine shop recommended it, and said it could rev to the moon. It also dampened a large part of the vibration I was having north of 3k rpms. The only downside is the price ($380).
I'm not biased one way or the other, the ATI is actually cheaper than the other brands, this is for a 1st gen motor, not a LT1 so the ATI balancer is only $260. I was just looking for more/other input. Right now it sounds like I should get a ATI balancer and I will probably order one tommorrow unless I get some other info. A few of my friends have reccomended TCI and a few reccomended ATI I'm just trying to get as much input as possible.
Thanks.
I had to have mine replaced aboout a year ago. I had an oem piece since my rebuild a few years ago. I went tith a Jegs house brand balancer that is SFI rated. I forgot the part #. So far so good.
I wondered this also, I was thinking of a 'Fluidamper' on my next rebuild, GMP markets two under part #'s 12341632 & 10051170 ones a 6.25" and the others a 7.25" and they weigh 7.9lbs and 13.4lbs respectively. I don't know if the 7.25" will fit on a C4 does anyone know?
Summit also sells them at $268 & $366. They also market a 'Streetdamper' 6.875" model which isn't SFI approved (less$$- $199) which is similar in size to the stockL98. This is what I was thinking of for my ZZ9 cammed L98, since it doesn't rev too high anyway. A m/ram or s/ram motor owner may want the extra piece of mind that SFI approval gives, I suspect it is a higher price for the label though more than anything else JMO.
Anyone have good or bad to say on these?
I was running 8,600 rpm with a BHJ with zero issues. When we rebuilt the engine after 3 seasons the bearings looked brand new. My 406 is internally balanced which is a plus. BHJ.
