Check out my site for a few low cost/free mods.

What year L98 do you have?

Ok here are a few free or low cost effective mods:
-10chp-remove the "frisbee" from the front of your water pump pulley, see my site for details, free
-8chp-install cut-back stock style AC Delco spark plugs, details & pic on my site, $12-$15
-10chp-install a 160deg T-stat and aux fan switch; wire the aux fan switch to control the main fan relay, $80
-10chp-install a K&N with cut air filter lid, $40

Of course you will see some large gains from the more expensive exhaust mods:
-20chp-2 1/2" front Y, hi-flow cat, hi-flow cat-back, $800-$1200
-18chp-ceramic coated FL headers, $500-$800. This would be a nice alternate to doing the 2 1/2" front Y

The free mods will take your power level up from 240chp to around 280chp; then the exhaust mods can raise it to around 320chp.

At this point you should also install an AFPR so you can bump fuel pressure a little, as you will need more fuel flow at WOT.

Beyond that you can do heads, cam and intake mods to push very close to 400chp, maybe closer to 380-390chp and still retain or boost the low end torque as well as extend the upper RPM range.

I have a question about removing the frisbee, if you do, can you still run the ac without the belt coming off?

Absolutely!

Gordon Killebrew told me that it was put on in '88 with the new style compressor to keep the belt from squealing sometimes when the A/C compressor cut on/off.

The style of the "frisbee" changed in '89 but it stayed with the L98 through '91; it was not used on the LT1s, from '92 forward.

I will remove my frisbee soon so I will let you know how it turns out. I am interested in this post because I am looking to do some of the more easy low buck stuff before I delve into the $$$$$ mods.

So far other than a good tune up and a K&N, the only mods I have made are a high flow cat and magnaflow cat-back. Not sure I can feel any difference. Hopefully the sum of many small mods will net a difference.
I think my next mod will be hooker 1 3/4 headers.

I think the 89 thru 91 L98 only had a 3lb. frisbee whereas the earlier 85-88 had a 10 lb. lunker. So don't expect a 10chp increase on the later C4 L98's.

I got rid of my 3 lb.'er on my 90 with no adverse reactions but I didn't feel a big sotp difference either. Every little bit adds up though. So do it.

As 65ZO1 stated, Gordon Killebrew says it was designed to dampen the cycling of the AC compressor and reduce the belt squeal. Later they decided it was obsolete.

No prob JZ. One more thing, if you have the 3 lb one, I had to put the pulley bolts back with a lockwasher each to replace the thickness of the boltpoints of the frisbee. Without the washers the bolts tightened up before the pulley was snug. So use either shorter bolts or lock washers.

Rather than cutting back the spark plugs, take a look at the Bosch Platinum+4 plugs - $5 apiece.

They have 4 side electrodes that opens up the flame path and being platinum tipped they should last longer too.

Do a search, alot of members frown on the Bosch platinum 4 plugs and say.. I had them and had a low idle miss shortly after installing. I then switched to cut back AC delco rapid fire #5's and had great success. I recently switched to a colder NGK plug to run with my nitrous which brings up another thing..never run any platinum plugs with nitrous. Never.
