For an internally balanced engine, the stock damper will be the easist. The timing marks will be in the right place and be closest to the timing tab.

RACE ON!!!

6 1/4", I don't think anything larger will fit.

My L98 stock damper is 6 3/4". I measured it to compair to Fluidamper, which is 6 7/8".

I'm getting the Fluidamper.

The stock neutral L98 is 6-3/4".
You have room for a 7" damper at the timing tab on the timing chain cover , and about 7 1/2 to 7-3/4" to clear the crossmember .
A question.
Which 383 internally balanced kit have you purchased?

you don't want to know the kinda headaches you can get from running an 8" dampner well unless you already know that it won't clear the crossmember go with a 6 3/4

I tried to use an 8" on my '86 and it did touch the crossmember. I bought a 6 3/4 from Summit. If you are on a tight budget like me they have one that is low priced, supposed to be better than oem and has timing degree marks built in.

Summit sell a 6.875" 'Street damper' (Fluidamper) which runs for $199. I was thinking of using this next. It isn't SFI approved, but seeing as I don't need SFI approval and therefore don't need to pay for it, it seems a reasonable buy and is the right size or better still, maybe a 1/8" larger than the stock one.
