OK, my auto tranny has a leak. At first I thought it was just the pan gasket leaking. But in the past couple of weeks, I've lost over a quart of fluid leading me to believe that it may be more than the pan, that perhaps the front seal is the culprit. Keep in mind, the car sits during the week and I only take it out on the weekends.
More recently, in addition to the leak, when the car is cold, the upshifts occur in the 2200 to 2400 RPM range and are rough. However, when the car is at normal operating temperature, it shifts fine.
I assume the trans you are reffering to is the trans in your 85. There are only so many places a trans can leak. Pan gasket, front or rear seal, front pump oring or the little orings on the pump bolts. Tv cable seal, dipstick tube seal, cooler lines, speedo etc. Most of the seals mentioned are pennies to buy. Labor can add up depending on the seal that needs changing. A $3 front seal could cost $300 to change in some parts of the country. The shifting problem could be many, many things that could relate to a sealing ring, o ring etc that will seal better with temperature. A rebuild is a simple solution. Most expensive but simple. I recommend taking it to a trans pro and have him run pressure tests to try to isolate the problem. In my opinion, a trans with more than 100k should be rebuilt rather than repaired.
