Default Help Please - 90 Vert Code 32, But Replaced EGR Recently..

I just started getting an Code 32 on my 90 Vert. Car has 47K miles, maybe 1000 since I replaced the EGR last fall. Also replaced injectors and T-Stat. I used a AC Delco EGR for the replacement. Can it be bad already? Or could else be causing this you can think of?
Any help much apprecaited !!

Has your exhaust system been modified? On my 91 I never got a code 32 until I started modifying my exhaust. I then proceeded to replace every component of the EGR system, but nothing I did would get rid of that damn code. It would come on usually after a cruise on the highway. I finally ended up having a custom prom burned that eliminated that code. No more code 32.

I'm assuming you used the GM service manual to diagnose the need for an EGR? Remember that in 1990, OBD I was more limited in what it could show as a fault than OBD II is. A code 32 doesn't necessarily point to a bad EGR -- it can also (and more often does) point to a failed EGR solenoid or to a vacuum leak. "Leak" doesn't mean "hole" -- could just be a vacuum line with a poor connection. When you replaced the EGR you took vacuum lines off, and put them back on. This could have "fixed" a vacuum leak, which has reappeared due to a deteriorated vacuum line. Check the lines, reset the code, and see if it returns. If it does, run the diagnostic tree for the solenoid shown in the service manual.

If your 90 has a egr temp sensor I would check that out a very common problem I have seen with C4s and thirdgen camaros.

If your '90 is the same as a '91, it does not have a temp sensor to "test" for EGR operation, but rather it looks for a change in the integrator.

A change to low restriction exhaust can cause a code 32 because there is not enought exhaust pressure to cause flow into the intake.

I have had temporarily put a no-cat exhaust on my '91 twice, both times it caused a Code 32, and both times the Code 32 failed to appear after changing back to a stock exhaust.

My exhaust is modified only with Borla mufflers. Rest is stock I think.
This was done before I purchased the car last year.

Regarding the diagnose, I just pulled the code and asked, knowing that I had just replaced the EGR last fall. I should consult the book on the EGR Solenoid. Thanks. Also, the vaccum lines / leak is a good idea an easy to check out.

I don't know about the EGR Temp Sensor. I'll have to look that up and take a look.

I apprecaite the ideas. Thank You.

I've gotten a code 32 a couple of times, only on long trips. I cleared it and it hasn't come back.

This one is funny. I drove it the day after my wife said the light came on and never got a code. Drove about 25 miles.
She drive to and from work in it sometimes and that's maybe 8 miles and gets another light.

How do you reset the code?

You can clear the code(s) by simply disconnecting the negative terminal off the battery for a minute. This will erase the code(s) and if it comes back you have to do some checking.

The $8 EGR switch is a common cure-all, too...

There is a method on my site to check out the EGR solenoid, valve and switch. Though your '90,91 doesn't have the switch the method will still work on testing other components.

BTW, thanks for the info on how the ECM checks EGR op without a switch.

Open the connector in the Orn wire near the battery for about a minute. This will reset any trouble codes without also resetting your radio and clock presets.

Thanks - I reset the code, and it has not thrown one today.
I did not see any vaccum leaks / loose hoses. I guess I'll monitor this
and see what happens. If it goes Code 32 again, I'm going to check out the solenoid.

So this consensus is my 90 does not have the switch some of you talked about?

If I had one, where would I find it?

Happy Friday to you all !!

My '90 threw a code 32 about a week ago but hasn't done it since. I was also thinking about eliminating the pre-cats and putting on a free flow main converter. Is this going to cause another code 32? Is it bad for the ECM or the engine if it throws a code and you just ignore it if it is intermittent? Thanks for the advice.
