Default Remove/Reinstall Rear Diff

How hard is this to do? Can it be done easily without a lift?

I found this in the tech archives

Anyone have any other pics/walk throughs.

it's just bolts... I have replaced the rear spring and half-shaft u-joints, and it's not all that bad, really.

You will want a floor jack to help support the differential whilst it is being lowered.

I would also replace all bushings and such.

Do NOT replace the GM specified bolts... they are more then reusable, and they have a special coating on them to stop the dissimilar metals from oxidizing.

As ski_dwn_it's excellent pictorial shows, removing the rear is not too difficult. When I swapped my Dana 36 for a Dana 44, I used a lift. However, it was one of the drive on lifts so I had to jack the rear up off the lift to remove the Dana 36. What I am trying to say is yes it can be done w/o a lift. In fact, the only reason I used a lift is I live on an Air Force base and they frown on major automobile projects being performed in a driveway.
The things that where the biggest PITA to me were removing the X-frame and changing all of the bushings and u-joints. My X-frame had two bolts that would not come out. I even broke a snap-on socket on one of them.
I would not attempt this project without a manual. I am **** about proper torque and install procedures whenever I work on systems on which failure is not an option, I.E. suspension, brakes, etc.
Be careful not to lift on the fiberglass part of the spring with the metal of your jack.
Good luck

Mike
