Default Hot Rod blasts C4 suspension....AGAIN.

Page 58 (very cool car BTW)

"Concieved more for its novelty than its functionality, the early Corvette IRS made for some treacherous handling. Its high roll center created a jacking problem that raised the rear of the car while cornering. The result was a detrimental change in the camber of the outside rear tire and a subsequent loss of grip. In addition to curing the jacking problem, the Newman [Newman Car Creations] retrofit kit features two trailing arms at each rear wheel instead of just one and a tie rod to reduce deflection and eliminate torque steer."

Not to mention the company is using stock strut rods in their "superior" kit.

What do you have to pull on a skidpad to convince these idiots that the suspension, while it has some cons, is overall a world class performance design and has been proven so?

Anyone have a video of Dr. Evil smoking every C5 in his stock C4 at the Cruise In a couple years ago????

Those idiots probably don't have anyone there smart enough to install or set it up correctly. But now if you're talking about bolting on some bling or the lastest, greatest gadget designed to get your money.... HRM are the experts!

I think that article was referring to the C2/C3 design. The newman suspension is a c4...

OK, now that I re-read it, you may be right. Its just that last month they called the 84 the first Corvette IRS and were very critical of it. This article seemed to be repeating that opinion, that early C4 suspensions were bad and somehow Newman eliminated all the quirks.

IMHO, they make a poor transition from mentioning the C4 kit and right away talk about the shortcomings of early Corvette IRS. And again, according to an article last month, early meant 84.

I'll let'em slide I guess..... :o

eh... the C2/3 IRS was a joke, really... sure, it was a huge improvement, but it hasn't aged well...

Us poor beggers in the C3 section are always trying to find ways to update or replace our rears. Guldstrand has a lot of good parts, and Im converting to a 5 link system myself... the C3 has a lot of problem with squatting and toe angle changes but its still pretty fair handling assuming your shocks are in good order.

The 4 link C2 IRs wasn't that bad at all. At the time the vaunted Mercedes was still using swing axles. I believe in 63 the Porsches were still death trap swing-axles as well.

We have two trailing arms.

Technically,we don't even have IRS or IFS because of the 2 monoleaf springs. But I won't count that, because along those lines, anything with a sway bar isn't independent either.

I disagree... independant is where the wheels can move at different angles independantly. The mono-leaf and/or sway bars do not change the independant function.

Default And this surprises you how?

Did anybody watch the Barret Jackson auction. Brock Yates who this publishing company uses as a stadard to judge by. Knew very little about American muscle cars. He was O'so happy when a little European job cam up. These were cars of importance. Funny thing is He working for a company that you would hope even likes american cars.

Many years ago I was reading in HRM the letters to the editor and a physics professor wrote and explained to them why the front end lifts upon acceleration and why their previous month's explaination was incorrect. Their reply cut his correct explaination down and since then I have never looked at another HRM issue again. I wonder how they (HRM) even find their way home at night!
