It's alive!
My '95 is out of storage after two years. The battery starts the car right up like always. The first couple days it shook and vibrated at anything over 25 mph. I think the tires developed a flat spot from sitting so long. Today, the car is as smooth as it was before. Everything seems to be fine except the gas guage. The gauge sometimes reads full and sometimes reads a half of a tank. I don't know if the float is sticking or if the guage is just shot. Also, the windshield washers don't work but they didn't before if I remember right. I wonder if the back up lights work. Anyway, it's good to get it back.
Oh yeah, my wife likes the car but to her it's just a car. For her, a car is a tool rather than a toy. She thinks it's probably too expensive but she doesn't dislike it either. I think it will grow on her over time. Then again, maybe not.

Layoff is the operative word here. I was layed off from my job the week of 9/11. I've had to sell my house and I'm in college working on my masters degree. My parents have put me up but now my wife and daughter have come to America and I am moving into a home. I needed to come back to Texas and get my things. The Vette is one of the things that went into storage 2 years ago when I sold my house.
I finally got work as a research assistant with the university and I'm getting interviews for the first time in 3 1/2 years. It looks like the draught is over.
Back to the technical: Does anyone know if the intermittent gas guage is common or if this is new for C4s? How about the windshield washer problem? Is it usually the pump motor?
I was required to fill the tank to store the car. I'm wondering if two years with the float at the top has caused it to stick or if it could be something else. I only got two different readings over the past couple days -- full and half. I filled it up today and it took 19 gallons. That says it was almost empty. The guage said full today. If the gauge is toast, I think the car is going to sit for a little while longer because until I get a full time engineering position, I'm not going to be able to afford to fix it and I can't afford to run out of gas all the time either.
Hopefully someone will answer your question about how common it is for an inoperative gas gauge. Since I don't know whether it is common to have an inoperative gas gauge because the one on my 1995 works.
I don't think that the sending unit would be terribly expensive.
