what is the best method for cleaning iacs? I have a bit of a rough idle and thought this would be a decent place to start. by the way stock 84 w/ crossfire. thanks..
If I remember correctly, you can just remove it and spray it with carb cleaner. Someone else may chime in to correct me, but I am going to do the same thing on my '94.
Yes, but keep the cleaning fluid away from the electrical part. I simply wire brushed mine. Cleaning the passages in the TB is as, if not more important than cleaning the IAC valves. Be sure to retract the pintles before you reinstall them.
thanks for the replies, i was hoping it would be so simple. just needed to know any cautions. why do these areas [iacs and throttle bodies] seem so prone to carbon buildup? is it cheap gas? i was under the impressions most gas had for the lack of a proper term, detergents in it. what about injector cleaner, worthwhile, harmful, or snake oil?

redline FI cleaner....no snake oil here.
carbon buildup is unavoidable...anything in the path of the intake and combustion cycles will get this crap...87, 89 or 91 octane..no matter.
you should also remove and clean your TB. The IAC passage gets quite a bit of carbon buildup too....This is an easy job if you have the TB collent bypassed.
