I was putting my new motor together today and when I primed it with a drill, I saw oil dripping from my oil cooler. I took the filter off and dropped the cooler. I received a new O ring with the Victor gasket kit and upon looking closer it appears to be too small in diameter to seal anything. No part store shows a gasket O ring for an oil cooler. It was too late to call Chevrolet.
After reading this, I am wondering if I should delete it. If so, what is involved? Is it a matter of changing a plate inside the housing and plugging the water off!
I am concerned now. New motor!
Thanks!!

I use an old oil filter oring as a replacement for the expensive oring. Been working fine for me for years. To eliminate the cooler you will need two smaller bolts for the oil filter adapter. A pipe plug will be needed for the block. The aluminum tube will need to be removed also. a short piece of heater hose will need to be routed from water pump to steel line on inner fender well. Not a big deal really.

Oil temp often is 10-30 degrees over engine coolaant temp. Cooler, even poor design factory type does a decent job of cooling. Lower oil temp ( to a point) increases engine life. Oil cooler is like an auto trans cooler. The trans will live without an aux cooler. It will usually live quite a bit longer with a good cooler.

hmmmm......i think i'll keep mine then.

if i was movnviolation, i would take your advice and use an oil filter gasket....that would be the round o-ring style and not the flat style, right? to movnviolation - i don't mean to speak for you, just talking out loud to myself

You are da man!! I read you're post and ran right out there and pulled a new filter off the shelf and sure nuff the gasket fit in there like it was made for it. Put it on. The gasket sticks up higher than the O ring. Should seal fine!
To tired to mess with building up pressure tonight.
What should this be torqued to, any ideas?
Thanks again! God I love this forum!!!!

Damn Pete sorry to hear more problems. When I had the bearing failier with my 396 Lou keept asking me if I had a oil cooler that may have had trapped crap in it from the cam retainer grinding down. He said the same thing about it causing failiers. (Didn't have one then)

I know your going to Beaver next Friday, But a few of us are going to Numedia next Friday since it may be less crowded with the event up the road. We also rented the track on June 18th again. $35 unlimited runs like last year. Good luck 3x's is a charm (worked for me)

Your attitude towards a dilema like this is awesome, and certainly a big pill to have to swallow. While I realize it really is the only positive attitude, its difficult to come to those terms especially in those circumstances. I also appreciatte your thread, in the near future Im tearing mine down, and the thought of an external oil cooler didnt even come to mind. Motors Ive worked on (all mopar) in the past did not have this inc. Thanks for posting this it is appreciatted. I hope you can salvage some of the parts out of those mills and put it back together w/out too much loss. Mick

i got the basic unit DER-15503, to replace the stock one. a fancier unit is unnecessary.

i'm replacing mine as a neceesary precautionary measure since i had metal shavings & chunks pass thru from the severe detonation and piston land failure caused by the irresponsible lack of tuning done to my chip by jesse azzato, who caused it to run horridly lean.

Brad, where are you gonna put it?

I may do this too and am considering an inline thermostat so the car can warm up quicker.

I was looking at this 13 row unit

I am not sure of the torque. Less is a bit better though. I once overtightened it. It caused the bypass to crack and instantly dump 5 qts of oil onto the road. I actually prefer the oring from the filter. Seems to do a better job imho. Thanks to all for the good words.

JAKE, relating to LD85's question as to where the oil thermostat goes, I have no idea. As per my post I got the DER-15503 unit. I didn't get all that other stuff like you did. Just the oil cooler unit. What differently needs done (fabricating or otherwise) to accomodate this thing vs. the stock direct replacement (which I obviously opted not to get)?

Edit: I just re-read your parts list agin, and see that you got a "remote" unit. This seems to explain the longer parts list.

I still have the same basic question though........
