This is a simple, stupid question. Is there a mercury switch or some other type of switch that automatically turns on the engine bay lights on the underside of the hood on an '89, or is there some manual switch somewhere?
They come on with a auto switch. I don't know where it's located. If yours never worked look to make sure they are plugged in. Just trace the wires. Most owners unplug them because of all the time the hoods stays up. Car shows, time in garage, ect.
It is a mecury switch. Located in fixture near bulb. One for each. It's a small silver cylinder.
Later models have a fuse you can pull down near vac canister. I wired a switch for mine or you can simply unplug them. Extended servvice periods will let them suckers drain the battery.

I put two switches in my 85. On the 94 I just unplug them. My garage is lit pretty well so I don't need the lights anyway if I'm messing around under the hood. I do reconnect them when I wash it though to avoid any potential contamination.
On the 86 they're mercury and you can pull the Courtesy (CTSY) fuse in the passenger side fuel panel to shut them down, but that also disables the inside courtesy lights, cigarette lighter and maybe some other things too.
I've seen a manual on/off switch that can be installed advertised in one of the Vette catalogs.
