I have a question for the tranny experts...I had my tranny rebuilt about 15 months ago...heavy duty everything since I drag race a lot...anyway, my question is: the rebuilder put in Mobil 1 fluid at the time and again after the break in period...aside from the extra heat capabilities of the synthetic, would regular tranny fluid actually be better in allowing the clutches to grab vs. synthetic ?...just a thought I had ...
Mobil 1 and other Dexron III certified ATFs have to meet same friction characteristics.
As you said, the synthetic fluid does have higher temperature capability--leading to less varnish and other deposits. It should also be better in keeping more "stuff" in suspension so you should be able to go longer between ATF changes. BTW, the newest Dexron III spec ("-H", I believe) pretty much requires a synthetic base or at least what the industry calls Group III.
