My grinding problem at startup has been linked to some bad teeth on my starter. While I am having my intake swapped (blown gasket ) I was wondering if I should swap this out. I am not sure but I would guess that it will just get worse and worse till it will not start but I am not sure how quickly this will happen.

Definitely examine the flywheel closely, all of the way around. If it looks good, you got lucky. If the starter is otherwise good, you could just replace the starter drive, what many call the Bendix. This involves some disassembly of the starter.
