My ALT pigtail crumbled when I pulled the engine out last June. I have my new 383 installed and I will be wiring up the pigtail today after work.
This info will be handy.
BTW: Does anyone know when the ALT is unplugged if the computer will keep the starter from turning over? I can't get the starter to engage with the key. If I jump the starter it fires and runs. I'm hoping once I fix the ALT wiring the starter will work.
I had to replace my alternator today and when I disconnected the regulator plug the old plug crumbled into plastic shards in my fingers.
I have a new plug now and think I remember the correct pin-outs for it.
To make sure I get it right does anyone know the correct order for P L I S?
any sure fire test to make sure I get it right?
Thanks in advance.

My car is all apart right now. If you don't have the answer by tonight, I'll take some pics and post. Won't take anything since the alts. not even in the car.
I have a 94 LT1. When I got the car the alt was shot, so I replaced it. Like a fool I did not disconnect battery and shorted something out in the wiring harness for the regulator. I installed a self exciting alt with no SOS lights coming on. The only drawback, at traffic lights with trun signal on, the amp guage jumps up and down and the headlights dim a little.

Don't know that the pics would help much as I forgot, I replaced my pigtail and all the wires are now white. Can't see what color they were attached to as it's all heat shunk and taped. What I can tell you is this. The large pin is S. Then the one next to it on mine is F, then L then P isn't used.
I went out for another look. Found the 10 AWG red wire can't miss it. It's S and in the harness it connects to the positive battery terminal. The alt uses this to sense if a batt is connected and at what voltage. The next wire was light brown and connected to I (sometimes labeled F ) the last wire was black or dark brown and connected to L.
I'm not sure the order but L and I feed the volt meters in the dash and the BATT light too.
As stated above P is unused.
I wanted to solder and shrink tube the connections but there is so little room in there. I went with Posi-Lock connectors. They use an ice cream cone shaped screw in plug to hold the wires and I was pleased with how well they grip the wires.
I found the pigtail at Autozone on an end cap. PN 85854 by "conduct-tite!"
Many thanks.
