Default Calling gear heads

88 auto w/ OD, bolt on mods.

was looking into a gear change. I have stock rear gears but don't know what size. at about 60 mph she tachs about 1100 rpm (very tall gears)
wanted a little more low end and I know enough about cars to know that gears will help.

Questions I have is:
1) what size is stock?
2) what is a good size to change to? street hotrod.
3) how hard is it to change them?
4) how much for new/ used gears?
5) if you have some how much or where to get some?

1) sounds like you have 2.59. the optional is 3.07
2) no more then 3.73, that's all that will fit in the D36.
3) you? don't even try. you need a shop who has the setup jigs. expect to pay about 300.00 for gears to be set. you can remove the pumpkin, tho... expect that to take a day.
4) gears are not that expensive... $200~$300
5) no clue.

you will also need to reprogram your car to accept the different gear....or else the speedo will be way off.

get a helm manual so you can read up on how to remove the rear suspension. www.helminc.com

gears are a great way to wake up a car... cheap.

Sounds like you have 2.59s, in a Dana 36 rear. I would never recommend someone changing gears unless theyre well experienced mechanically.

With the L98 engine, 3.07 is the perfect gear, but its not a gigantic jump from 2.59. Anything more than this will make the car quicker to 60, but slower from there on.

I would not change gears unless you get a Dana 44 from the manual cars, its stronger.

I suggest you install a 2200rpm TC in your tranny, along with a tranny cooler, that will allow you to get that same jump off the line as lower gears would.

Maybe 373 it to tall for a bone stock car,but I have run 12.60's at 114 on 373's and went through the traps in the top of 3rd perfect.Car did have a zz-x cam though but the tpi intake was stock except for ported upper plenum(at throttle body)
A good torque converter is worth the money spent.I would look towards a vigalante personally.
Good luck,

There are so many people that does NOT race.. If yu plan to use the car on the street a step over the 3.07 will bring you to a whole new car!
I have a 3.54 and i can say that this is the best mod i have made to my car!
a 2.59 is taller also in the highway. (IMO).
Witha 3.54 in OD you really need so little gas pedal to accelerate in highway...
